Absenteeism prevention: earlier intervention is more effective than extensive recovery efforts.

Bart van Dijk · 22 August 2026

Most stress-related absenteeism doesn't come out of nowhere. It's preceded by a period in which someone recovers less and less, makes small mistakes more often, and slowly withdraws. In that phase, much can still be reversed; after reporting sick, the process becomes long and expensive. Absenteeism prevention is therefore primarily a matter of daring to start earlier.

Taking the signals seriously

Managers often see the first signs, but acting on them is difficult: it quickly feels like interfering with someone's private life. An accessible, voluntary offer solves this. Someone who can choose a coach themselves, on their own initiative and without the content reaching the employer, is more likely to engage than someone who first has to go through HR.

Why confidentiality is key

Prevention only works if employees trust the offer. That's why Coachloket has clearly defined the roles: the employer pays and sees numbers at a group level, the employee chooses the coach and keeps the content to themselves, and they only share a progress status with their own, revocable consent. This way, seeking help doesn't become a career risk.

From good intentions to a structured arrangement

Occupational health services have been pointing out for years that a day of absenteeism costs many times what prevention costs; the exact amounts vary per organization. Therefore, don't calculate with an average, but with your own figures: our calculation tool shows what absenteeism costs in your organization and what a bundle of coaching spots offers in return. The calculation runs on your own input, and we do not store it.
