What does absenteeism really cost your organization?

Bart van Dijk · 22 August 2026

Ask any entrepreneur what absenteeism costs, and the answer is usually: the salary you continue to pay. That's the visible part. The actual bill is larger, and it's precisely the invisible part that makes absenteeism so expensive.

The factors that count

In addition to continued salary payment (in the Netherlands up to two years), other factors include: replacement or hiring, training that replacement, lost productivity in the weeks before reporting sick, extra pressure on colleagues who take over the work, guidance and reintegration costs, and sometimes a higher premium. Every organization has its own mix in this; therefore, a national average says little about your situation.

Calculate with your own figures

We don't believe in impressive figures without a source. That's why our company page features a calculation tool that computes with your own input: number of employees, absenteeism percentage, and wage costs. You immediately see what one percentage point of absenteeism costs your organization and what preventive coaching offers in return. The calculation takes place on our server, and we do not store your input.

From costs to prevention

Those who have a clear understanding of their own absenteeism costs look at prevention differently. A bundle of coaching spots is a transparent, pre-defined investment, while employees can confidentially engage with it: the employer sees numbers at a group level and never the content. This way, prevention becomes a budget item instead of a gamble.
